About the Project

The Universal Child Benefit (UCB) was a pilot project aimed at providing grants to children under three years old while educating caregivers on safe feeding practices and proper child-rearing. Implemented by Save the Children in partnership with UNICEF and WFP, the UCB served as a safety net cash transfer program, reaching 8,300 households across Kisumu, Embu, and Kajiado Counties. Supported by Save the Children Italy, other donors, and the Ministries of Labour, Social Services, and Health, the initiative ran for twelve months, distributing bi-monthly cash transfers. It also incorporated nutrition support, positive parenting education, and disability inclusion services.

A collaborative effort led by Save the Children, in partnership with UNICEF, WFP, and the Government of Kenya, the UCB pilot reached 8,300 households over a 12-month period. Funded by Save the Children Italy and other donors, the program distributed bi-monthly cash transfers, reinforcing a holistic approach to early childhood care. By integrating financial aid with essential guidance, the initiative served as a model for inclusive and sustainable child welfare policies, demonstrating the impact of targeted social protection in shaping healthier futures.
